Watch the Vivid Trailer for Steven Spielberg's 'West Side Story' Remake
Starring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler.
Disney and 20th Century Studios on Wednesday shared the first official trailer for Steven Spielberg‘s adaptation of the critically-acclaimed 1957 Broadway show, West Side Story.
The visual highlights the classic tale of forbidden romance between Tony (Ansel Elgort) and Maria (Rachel Zegler) and the fierce rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks. Underscored by the musical’s famed duet, “Tonight,” Tony and Maria meet each other for the first time at a neighborhood dance in 1950s New York, where they learn that they belong to opposing Upper West Side gangs.
“I’ve never seen you before,” Maria tells Tony at their initial meeting. “You’re not Puerto Rican.” He replies, “Is that okay?” The preview then bounces between a slew of dance numbers and street fights, ultimately showcasing Spielberg’s cinematic interpretation of the beloved Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim musical.
The film also stars Ariana DeBose, David Alvarez, Mike Faist, Josh Andrés Rivera, Corey Stoll and Brian d’Arcy James. Rita Moreno, who took home an Oscar for her role in the original West Side Story, also appears in Spielberg’s version. The musical received its first screen adaptation in 1961 and won a total of 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.
The film wrapped production in October 2019, but its premiere has been delayed several times due to COVID. Now, West Side Story will officially hit theaters on December 10.
