Just weeks ahead of the film’s global premiere, lead actor Vin Diesel has now shed more light on the upcoming ninth installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, teasing a return to the saga’s origins.

Appearing on a recent episode of Binge with Entertainment Weekly, Diesel said that the new film will revisit the first movie of the franchise, taking fans back to 2001.  “The whole world has this excitement about this movie coming out, but for those who have been with the franchise, it’s even more special,” he explains. “Because if you can remember the first movie, you are now going to go before the first movie and understand the first movie even more.”

Continuing on, Diesel teased part of his character Dom Toretto’s origin story, including the introduction of his brother, played by John Cena. “So to see family members you never thought you would have seen, it’s gonna kind of blow your mind,” he remarked. “We’ve been wanting to know, where was Dom before he became Dom? Who were his influences? That’s going to be really rich with story, and a lot of fun to see.”

While F9 will be looking backward into the beginnings of the franchise, Diesel says there’s also plenty more to come for the future of the saga. “Just wait for 10,” he teased. “Let’s just say, the fact that you guys know that the studio is saying we can’t cover all this ground that needs to be covered in just one movie, you can only imagine what is to come.”

F9‘s global premiere is scheduled for May 19 and will reach theaters stateside June 25.

Elsewhere in entertainment, HBO Max has cast Finn Wittrock as Guy Gardner in the upcoming Green Lantern series.
