The next generation of Toyota/Subaru sports coupe is finally here: the GR 86.

Differentiating it from the Scion FRS and the Toyota GT 86 before it, the GR 86 is meant to be the successor to the wildly popular dual-platform sports 2+2 introduced back in 2012. In terms of changes, the GR – short for Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s in-house sports and racing developer – arrives with a larger engine, now housing 2.4 liters instead of the previous 2.0L. The 20% increase in displacement means the GR 86 outputs a sizable amount of additional horsepower. Toyota did not include the specific figure, but if it’s a true twin to the Subaru BRZ, the specs should be 228 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque. Toyota did however reveal that the GR will outperform the previous model in acceleration, now accomplishing 0-60 in 6.3 seconds rather than the GT 86’s 7.4s.

Design-wise, the GR retains much of the sports 2+2 coupe’s design language, with a more chiseled front end. Larger front side air intakes scoop in fresh air that’s diverted down the sides, while the central front intake is larger and more gaping than that of the BRZ. 18” sqaured-off wheels come standard for the RWD chassis, sporting 215/40/R18 tires across the car’s total 2799 lb. weight.

Other key changes include aluminum roof and fender panels, “improved” body and torsional rigidity for better steering input and stability, and the inclusion of Subaru’s EyeSight technology that includes steering wheel centering, lane drift detection, distance-keep cruise control and more, for automatic transmission models. A six-speed manual option is available as well, for the purists.

The 2022 Toyota GR 86, like the Subaru BRZ, will begin launching in Japan this fall. In other news involving JDM unveils, Genesis has revealed its Genesis X concept vehicle.
