Daniel Arsham Transforms KÖNIG GALERIE Into a Hall of Antiquities
His first solo exhibition in the German capital.
Daniel Arsham has his hands in many different artistic projects at the moment, from his recent ‘CRYSTALIZED CHARMANDER,’ a collaboration with Tiffany & CO., to his otherworldy exhibition at China’s UCCA Dune Museum. For those of you who are currently in Berlin, the artist is currently showcasing an exhibition entitled, “UNEARTHED” at KÖNIG GALERIE.
As his first solo exhibition in the German capital, the show transforms the former brutalist church of St. Agnes, into a wunderkammer of antiquities. Past meets present as Augustus Ceasar, Apollo and Venus are reimagined through Arsham’s characteristic approach of recasting and eroding these figures for new eyes. Adjacent to the sculptural works are some of Arsham’s largest paintings to date, which equally present these deities to the backdrop of a cavernous grotto.
At the center of the exhibition stands a massive statue of the winged goddess Nike. Arsham’s reinterpretation references the original cast of the same sculpture from the Louvre in Paris. “UNEARTHED” showcases two separate but interrelated bodies of work that transports these icons from the legends of history into the distant future. The exhibition is on view at KÖNIG GALERIE until October 24.
