Watch Doug Aitken’s 'Mirage Gstaad' House Disappear During a Snowstorm
Located in the Swiss Alps.
In February 2019, Doug Aitken’s traveling Mirage installation had its final stop at Gstaad in the Swiss Alps. The site-specific work features a mirror-clad house that reflects the snowy terrain of the surrounding area.
As part of designboom’s ongoing video series, the renowned contemporary artist recently shared a new striking clip of Mirage during a winter storm. The ranch-style home appears to vanish in the heavy snowfall. “I think a lot of my artwork really deals with structure and systems. They look towards the experiential, but they also look towards the tactile and the physical. We have kind of an increasing desire to find ourselves stepping into the unknown,” said the artist in the video.
Before finally settling in the Swiss Alps, the ranch-style home was installed at the Mojave Desert in California, as well as inside an abandoned bank building in Detroit as part of two separate installments. Watch the video below and then visit Doug Aitken’s website to view more projects.
