'Sonic the Hedgehog' Sets New Record for Biggest Video Game Movie Opening Weekend
Even beating out ‘Detective Pikachu.’

Despite Sonic the Hedgehog‘s rocky start last year, the adaptation has managed to rally back, earning it the title of the biggest opening weekend for any video game movie ever.
When the trailer for Paramount‘s new release first hit the Internet, it was met with widespread criticism, mostly due to its less-than-faithful depiction of the titular character, which enraged many diehard fans. Surprisingly, the studio took the comments seriously and the CGI team managed to create new animations for the speedster after a short three-month delay to the release date, which subsequently earned the Internet’s support back, and now, it seems Paramount had made the right call.
Over its opening weekend, the movie raked in a whopping $100 million USD globally and $57 million USD domestically, even beating out Detective Pikachu‘s $54 million USD opening despite that movie launching during blockbuster season. Proving particularly popular in both Mexico and the UK, Sonic the Hedgehog now stands as the highest-grossing video game movie during its opening weekend and could become the biggest holiday opening weekend of the year.
In other entertainment news, Castlevania has released a new trailer for its upcoming third season.
