MIC/LINE (formerly named Sound Check) is HYPEBEAST Radio‘s music-centric show that looks to deliver in-depth conversations with your favorite artists, digging into their origin stories and asking the questions you want answered. For our season three finale we sit down with the legendary rapper E-40 and OMB Peezy.

22-year-old rapper OMB Peezy (born LeParis Dade), grew up in Mobile, Ala. until relocating to Sacramento at the age of 12. It was when his 2016 track “Lay Down” reached Vallejo rapper Nef the Pharaoh, that ultimately gained the attention of Bay Area legend E-40. Soon after he was signed to his label Sick Wid It Records, and since then the two have had a close mentorship relationship.

“I think a lot of people be for themselves. If something be working for them for many years, and they ain’t never been one to spit the game as a mentor, they gon’ stay in their element,” says E-40.

With two mixtapes and a recent album, Preacher to the Streets, OMB Peezy says his passion lies in writing and storytelling — having written his first rap at eight years old. But aside from music, OMB Peezy and E-40 have focused on entrepreneurship — OMB’s weed strain “Peezy Purple” and E-40’s notable range of alcoholic beverages such as Hurricane Slurricane.

A rap legend, Black business owner and mentor, E-40 stresses the importance of utilizing social media to get noticed. Regardless of how big or small your following is, OMB Peezy claims, “it’s like sending an application.” Whatever the venture may be, OMB Peezy hopes to see gold in his future by staying humble and to himself along with the guidance of E-40.
