As fashion enthusiasts begin the migration from Paris to Copenhagen; to London and onward in chase of the next fashion week, there is something different taking place on the other side of the world. In an immense Taiwanese marble factory, Necessity Sense is showing its AW19 collection, “Conscious Creatures.”

The brand’s presentation footage shows its models walking between impeccably tall slabs of polished stone that stand in contrast to the dimly lit industrial space of the set. Meanwhile, the atmosphere feels reminiscent of mafia meeting spots, similar to those you’d see in ‘80s, ‘90s Asian dramas. With that said, it makes sense that Oldboy, Fallen Angels, Sonatine, Blue Spring, and Young And Dangerous have all been cited as sources of inspiration for this season’s designs.

The film references throughout are clearly visible. Tender moments such as the motorcycle scene from Fallen Angels have been dyed onto silk shirts. While patterns from wallpaper and bowls seen in Oldboy have been adapted into prints. All the while, Manila-based artist Eyedress, has mixed samples of Oldboy dialogue into the synth, post-punk tracks blasting overhead.

Aside from Eastern pop culture references, the collection also features a couple collaborations. Knits, shirts and jackets are adorned with the Japanese block-style work of artist Kour Pour, while two new sunglass designs with MYKITA also make a debut. See the collection in full, in the video and BTS photos above and below. To see more from Necessity Sense, check them out online here and here.
