A Music Legend Speaks on Being Sampled by Frank Ocean
“Because it’s Frank Ocean, it was obviously going to be a big deal.”
One of the legendary artists whose music was sampled for Frank Ocean‘s new studio album Blonde has shared his thoughts about the sampling. For Frank Ocean’s recent album effort “Futura Free,” the London-based crooner employed a sample from Gang of Four’s 1979 deep cut “Love Like Anthrax.” For a new interview conducted by Brooklyn Vegan, Gang of Four guitarist Andy Gill had nothing but praise for Frank and his music, revealing that the singer even played the song over the phone for Gill. “Because it’s Frank Ocean, it was obviously going to be a big deal,” says Gill. Explaining the entire backstory, Gill shares:
“Frank Ocean’s management got in touch with me in November of last year saying that Frank was building a song which featured a loop from “Anthrax” and could he have permission to use it… My first thought was that this is fairly unusual for people to be that up front and honest. Most bands just take Gang of Four ideas and dress them up a little and call them their own!”
