The Weeknd Donates $50,000 to University of Toronto

To help create a new Ethiopic Studies program.

The Weeknd has recently donated $50,000 to the University of Toronto to help the school and a local organization develop an Ethiopic Studies program. As The Toronto Star reports,the donation came about after the Bikila Award organization, which “foster[s] academic, professional and business excellence and promote volunteerism among persons of Ethiopian origin.” The organization reached out to the Ethiopian-Canadian singer, real name Abel Tesfaye, to see if he would contribute. Abel agreed immediately and signed on. The $50,000 donation will go towards “a course on the Ge’ez, an ancient Ethiopian script and language also known as Ethiopic.”
