Nicki Minaj Freestyles a New “Barbie Dreams” Verse on 'The Late Show'
The lyrics made Stephen Colbert blush.
Nicki Minaj‘s “Barbie Dreams” is one of the hottest songs right now — the track is off of Nicki’s new album Queen and turned social media upside down as she runs through a list of rap’s biggest names (Drake, Eminem, 50 Cent, DJ Khaled) while playfully takes shots at them all.
While appearing on The Late Show on Monday night (August 13), host Stephen Colbert brought up “Barbie Dreams” and wondered why he wasn’t name-dropped on the record.
“This one’s getting a lot of attention for some of the famous men you call out in this and you … in no uncertain terms describe reasons why these men would not be able to — as the kids say — ‘get with you,’” Colbert says. “But I noticed I am not on the list of men … I’m just … it’s a pretty comprehensive list! And I’m just curious, if I were to make the list, how might you inform me?”
Being the lyricists that she is, Nicki Minaj added a verse on-the-spot that made Colbert turn red. “I might f*ck Stephen after the show / He gon’ come back to work with a magical glow.”
Aubry “Big Juice” Delaine, Nicki Minaj’s recording engineer on her new album Queen, revealed that the New York rapper performed 90% of “Barbie Dreams” in one take.
“That’s hip-hop in its truest form,” Delaine said. “I didn’t know what she was gonna say. I wanna say she did 90% of that in one take. She mumbled the hook when she was laying the verses, laid the rest of it, went back and put the hook in the middle… When she finished, I hit the talkback button, ‘like this shit right here!’ She was laughing too.” Read the full interview here.
