Niantic is best known for the enduringly-popular Pokémon Go, but is also recognized for its efforts to create cutting-edge AR experiences. The company recently revealed its latest project, dubbed “Niantic Real World Platform,” an effort to further blend the lines between reality and the digital world. Key components include creating AR software that can recognize real world objects, resolve minute details and react accordingly. Put simply, seamless integration is the end goal; “Imagine, for example, that if our platform is able to identify and contextualize the presence of flowers, then it will know to make a bumblebee appear,” the company posits. “Or, if the AR can see and contextualize a lake, it will know to make a duck appear.”

Get all the info on Niantic’s blog and check out the in-progress Niantic Real World Platform in action below. Most recently, the company introduced an in-depth trading system for Pokémon Go.
