Furniture giant IKEA has linked up with NASA‘s Mars research station to design a new collection, dubbed RUMTID or “spacetime” in Swedish, inspired by life in space. The project tackles urban small-space living by using modularity and mobility, offering four different product ranges that focus on issues of time, space, water and air.

The products include a redesigned air purifier, an indoor terrarium pod, lighting solutions and a modular, block-based furniture system made of a new lightweight veneer material made of recycled wood and waste that’s rolled into hollow tubes. “By cutting the tubes into different lengths and clamping them together, we can build just about anything, be it sofas, wardrobes, beds or something else completely,” said creative leader Micahel Nikolic.

IKEA and NASA’s RUMTID collection is slated to launch by 2020 across all IKEA stores. Take a look at some of the designs above and share your thoughts below.

IKEA also has a slew of collaborations in the pipeline, including one with Virgil Abloh, who responded to claims of his designs being unoriginal.
