Spotify has been in Asia for two years now but hasn’t quite capitalized on two of the more important markets in the region: Japan and Indonesia. The interest of music streaming in Japan has been rapidly increasing while Indonesia is home to the world’s fourth largest country with a population of over 250 million that hasn’t been tapped into yet. As it stands, Spotify has 75 million users across more than 60 countries worldwide, but out of that, it only supports six markets in Asia. With that in mind, this rollout in Asia is long overdue, especially since Apple Music is beginning to become widely available across the continent. CDs still make up a significant part of the Japan’s music sales, while Indonesian music streamers are primarly using Rdio and Deezer.

A spokesperson for Spotify Asia had this to say:

“We’re looking to be everywhere in Asia eventually. We’ve had a Japanese team in place for a while but there’s no confirmed launch date in the market as yet.”

It should also be noted, Japan recently started it’s own native streaming service, “Line” which was debuted in June which will certainly provide some challenges for Spotify.
