6LACK Welcomes Vulnerability When Making Music
The East Atlanta crooner talks new album, personal growth, fame, Atlanta’s music scene, and so much more.
MIC/LINE (formerly named Sound Check) is HYPEBEAST Radio‘s music-centric show that looks to deliver in-depth conversations with your favorite artists, digging into their origin stories and asking the questions you want answered. On our second episode of season two, we sat down with 6LACK.
It’s been two years since 6LACK — the 26-year-old East Atlanta crooner — dropped his breakout debut album, Free 6LACK. Since then his star power has jumped to new levels, especially after releasing his latest album, East Atlanta Love Letter. The LP debuted at No. 3 on Billboard 200, moving 77,000 units in its first week. With his newfound look — he cut off his signature hair during the summer of 2017 — and fame, plus the birth of his daughter, 6LACK is in a completely different space, within his life and music career. Talking about his growth as a celebrity, 6LACK is cognizant about the areas he needs to work on.
“I think the difficulty comes in me actually talking about [the songs] in real life,” he says. “I got in the habit of thinking because I wrote it or sung it, I don’t have to talk about it. And now I’m in the process of saying, ‘That’s cool bro, but the people you’re dealing with in real life aren’t waiting to hear a song to know what the fuck you think,’ you have to figure out how to talk.”
For this episode, 6LACK discusses his time between 2016’s debut album and East Atlanta Love Letter, personal growth, fame, Atlanta’s current music scene, songwriting and so much more.
