Homer Simpson is now in the Baseball Hall of Fame. On Saturday, the American cartoon character received his own honorary plaque at Cooperstown, New York during a celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Simpsons episode “Homer at the Bat.”

The famous 1992 episode featured guest appearances from MLB all-stars Ozzie Smith, Ken Griffey Jr., Wade Boggs, Don Mattingly, Jose Canseco and Steve Sax, who told the Associated Press “I get asked as much about being on The Simpsons as I do about baseball. They don’t want to know how it was to hit against Nolan Ryan. They want to know about being on that show.”

The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean commented on the episode’s legacy within baseball history. “There’s nostalgia because a lot of people were kids when it first aired,” Jean told the Hall of Fame. “It’s a real glimpse of ’90s era baseball. Baseball has changed since then — it’s a different kind of game.”

As for Homer Jay Simpson, the “inept safety inspector turned city-wide softball hero” delivered an acceptance speech at the ceremony. “My record for eating hot dogs will never be broken. I’ve been a fan for 40 years, which is how long some games take. And I can’t wait for the ceremony in Canton, Ohio.” Share your thoughts in the comments.
