Architecture Firm Creates Art Gallery-Inspired Garage in Portugal
Cars on display.
Architects Paulo Martins designed a spacious garage for a private client looking to display a prime collection of automobiles. With so much open space, the designers had free reign to create the ideal space to show off the cars and motorcycles.
The client placed the garage on the property’s northern portion, with a house to be built in the center. With so much free land, however, Paulo Martins was essentially given unlimited space to erect a space for the vehicles. Taking cues from both art galleries and bunkers, the designers opted for a rectangular structure roofed by lacquered aluminum sheets. A freestanding structure constructed of girders keeps in line with the building’s industrial inclinations, with clean lines and a muted grey palette evoking contemporary design. Meanwhile, the inside of the building is pristine and well-lit, mimicking the sleek interior of a modern art gallery.
Completed after 1 year of construction, the private garage is indicative of the modern house set to be constructed to its south. For more sleek structures, check out the Coeda House cafe in Shizuoka, Japan.
