The Long-Awaited 'Prey' Reboot Looks Like 'Bioshock' in Space
It also completely abandons the original’s Native American narrative.
2006’s Prey was an innovative first-person shooter than incorporated Cherokee mythology and spirituality, portals and variable gravity into its gameplay. Despite initial reservations regarding the portrayal of Native American tribes, the game was widely well-received and work on a sequel was started shortly after the original’s release; however, the sequel ran into development issues and it was eventually canned, before the rights to the intellectual property were acquired by Bethesda Softworks, the studio best known for its work on Elder Scrolls and the best-selling Fallout series.
This reimagining of Prey, however, bears little resemblance to its original source material: the Cherokee spirit-walking segments have been excised completely, and the game is now set in a 1960s-inspired future eerily reminiscent of Bioshock. The trailer follows one Morgan Yu as his life on the space station Talos 1 is completely upended by an alien invasion. Luckily, Yu is an experiment subject who has been granted some pretty devastating powers and abilities.
