The Edgeland House by Bercy Chen Studio sits in a gap once occupied by a Chevron pipeline on a rehabilitated brownfield site. Despite its ultra modern appearance, the residence’s design is actually a modern reinterpretation of the Native American Pit House, one of the oldest housing technologies in North America, which allows the structure to maintain thermal comfort throughout the year with its sunken placement 7 feet into the ground. The home’s insulative green roof and site, made in collaboration with the Lary Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, features over 40 native species of plants and wildflowers, and serves as both protection to the ecosystem and a natural form of temperature control. Split between a living area and sleeping quarters by a concrete pavilion, the Edgeland house also features a pool and floor-to-ceiling glazing throughout.
