These Photographs Show What Radioactive Fukushima Looks Like Now
Five years after all the humans have left.
It’s been five years since the catastrophic nuclear meltdown occurred in Fukushima, Japan and now photos of the abandoned city have emerged from a brave soul who recently snuck in to photograph the apocalyptic scene. Malaysian photographer Keow Wee Loong and two friends were able to sneak past authorities into the designated exclusion zone where the area remains “frozen in time.” On March 11, 2011 residents fled the area when a nuclear power plant was hit by a tsunami following a 9.0 magnitude earthquake. Keow states, “When I entered the red zone, I could feel a burning sensation in my eyes and thick chemical smell in the air.”
Check out the eerie photos above, which are a chilling reminder of the Fukushima disaster.
