Google's Gboard iOS App Could Be a Serious Game-Changer
The tech giant dives headfirst into the third-party keyboard game.
Google has released a new third-party keyboard app—Gboard—designed for Apple’s iOS. The keyboard puts a range of the search engine’s most popular and practical functions directly at users’ fingertips, allowing them to find restaurants and emoji without the hassle of switching between apps and copy-pasting, much like its newly-announced Android-exclusive Tap To Translate function hopes to do for the monolingual among us.
Gboard allows you to perform searches for locations, images, GIFs and emoji before pasting them directly into the appropriate conversation. It also offers word-tracing predictive text.
All in all, the move seems like the latest in a string of hyper-competitive moves by the tech giant: in addition to the convenience it provides, the app integrates many of Android’s more enviable features to the iPhone, all while effectively doing away with the need for separate third-party keyboard apps like SwiftKey and GIPHY; the latter just released its own standalone keyboard only a few days ago.
