GoPro Unveils the 360-Degree Omni
A less expensive take on last year’s $15,000 USD Odyssey rig.
Virtual reality and 360-degree video or all the rage so, naturally, GoPro got in on the action last year with its Odyssey. Now, however, the company is looking to introduce something a little bit less cost-prohibitive than the aforementioned $15,000 USD rig. The result? The Omni.
First teased back in February, the new set-up basically combines six HERO4 Black cameras in a cube-like shell. While full tech specs and a price point have yet to be revealed, the Omni should cost significantly less than the Odyssey (which used 16 of the HERO4 Blacks instead of six), but will hopefully — like the Odyssey — sync each of the cameras together down to the pixel level. The Odyssey also came with 16 microSD cards and 16 Array Bacpacs along with a Pelican case, so it’ll be interesting to see what else is included in the package.
Stay tuned for more in-depth info as GoPro is expected to announce a release date and further details in the weeks ahead.
