Meet Liam, Apple's iPhone-Deconstructing Robot
Apple’s sustainability initiative has a name.
Legendary industrial designer Dieter Rams was once quoted as saying that Apple was the company that best exemplified his ten principles of good design, and now the California-based tech giant is taking a step further in its sustainability and environmentalism: meet Liam.
Liam is a robot built to deconstruct used and obsolete iPhones, salvaging materials like cobalt and lithium from the phone’s battery, gold copper from the camera and all the other rare and fine metals that help make up everyone’s favorite mobile device. These materials are then sorted, collected, repurposed and recycled to help make new iPhones, while making Apple’s current fleet of devices more sustainable and environmentally-friendly.
Thanks in advance, Liam.
