The Atmo Sfera Platterless Turntable Flips Conventional Design on Its Head
An innovative redesign of the analog staple.
This platterless turntable designed by Italian start-up Audio Deva, cleverly dubbed the Atmo Sfera, is a marvel of industrial design. According to the company’s Kickstarter campaign video and information, the company sought to revolutionize the turntable’s relatively staid design narrative by doing away with a mat and platter, so as to give the appearance of a vinyl record floating in mid-air as it is played. This is in opposition with traditional turntable design, where the weight of the player’s platter and plinth were said to absorb more vibrations and provide more stability. This design, however, lends itself to boxy, clunky, and cumbersome record players that are a pain to store and move, to say nothing of their aesthetic boxiness. The Atmo Sfera, on the other hand, is a futuristic-looking alternative to the traditional record player that utilizes the bare minimum of tray-space to reduce vibration and unwanted noise while also making the technology compact, portable and visually striking.
