Commercial Flights Between Cuba and the U.S. to Begin This Fall
Pack your bags.
After the close of half a century of economic blockades on Cuba, the United States’ political detente with the Communist island nation means good things for avid travellers with the news that direct commercial flights between the two countries will begin later this year. Transportation ministers from Cuba and the U.S. recently signed a deal that paves the road for travel both ways, allowing hundreds of thousands more American tourists to flock to Cuba, on top of the 160,000 leisure travellers who visited the island last year. American airlines are now bidding for the air routes to Havana, bringing to an end the expensive alternative of charter flights from Florida that were the only option before. However, the winning airlines will then have to strike up their own deals with the Cuban government. Needless to say, it’s time to dust off the ol’ Panama hat and pack your bags for this long neglected neighbor across the Gulf of Mexico.
