The founder and owner of Staple Design sits down with XXL for the first episode of “Flip My Style.”
XXL has launched a new video series titled “Flip My Style,” focusing on the intersection between hip hop and fashion. For its inaugural episode, the magazine brought on streetwear pioneer jeffstaple to provide an in-depth interview on how he got his start in the industry. Drawing from artists including The Roots, Common, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Staple explains how his initial clothing designs stemmed from a desire to translate the thought-provoking lyrics of his music inspirations into fashion. He also mentions that the name “Staple” came from focusing on essential elements, akin to the raw aspects of hip-hop that influenced his style. From silk-screening T-shirts by hand during his time at Parsons, to his introduction into the music scene through Rawkus Records, Staple provides an evolution of his brand, along with an overall shift in hip-hop fashion led by artists like Pharrell and Kanye West.
