The World's Youngest Master Penman Talks Passion & Commitment
Having devoted his life to the pen, master penman Jake Weidmann makes a case for the beauty of handwriting.
Words in today’s world are facing a crisis: so often represented by emotionless pixels on a screen devoid of the author’s quirks of personality, there is less and less of a need for the tactile art of handwriting. As such, it is an exceedingly rare quality for one to not only champion the discipline of calligraphy, but to devote their entire life to the discipline of penmanship. Jake Weidmann is one such person, but what makes him even more unique is that, of 12 accredited master penman in the world, he is the youngest by three decades. In the video above, Weidmann provides a glimpse into his often months-long process of creating elaborate works of calligraphy, the ardor and toil that is necessary to achieve such a position, and the power of the pen that remains in an increasingly isolating world of electronic devices.
