Since the halcyon days of Suga Free, DJ Quik, Snoop and their Dickies-suited, low-riding, 40-downing brothers-in-rap, the rules for lyrics in funky, groove-laden California hip-hop have been simple: if a girl’s appearance isn’t on-par and the money isn’t right, it’s just not happening. Bearing the torch for that decades-old lineage, Jay Worthy, Jay 305, and Detroit’s Payroll Giovanni spit similar treatises on their new collaborative effort, “Won’t Holler.” Like past releases from Jay Worthy, this one is seeped in the old-school aesthetic and feel of west coast gangsta-rap classics. However, until some others on the opposite coast, instead of drowning in nostalgia, Worthy keeps things modern, tasteful, and worthy of a late-summer night-drive, regardless of whether your street of choice is Rosecrans, Slauson, Bristol, Waterman or Mission. As an added bonus, Freeway Rick Ross provides some narration. You can listen to the District Yori-produced “Wont Holler” above.
