Dolce & Gabbana 2016 Spring/Summer Collection
Oriental kitsch is the name of the game with the designer duo’s latest collection.

Inspired by the 18th century architectural folly that is the Chinese Palace in Palermo, Italy, Dolce & Gabbana looked east for its 2016 spring/summer collection and found a lavish aesthetic bordering on Oriental kitsch. In the mammoth lineup, there was no shortage of chinoiserie motifs printed onto silk shirts and embroidered onto loose-fitting, unfinished hopsack tops — in less-skilled hands the pieces would have looked garish, but with the designer duo, the kitsch is elevated with juxtaposition of materials and considered styling. Interspersed with sharply tailored three-piece suits throughout, the collection comes across as a somewhat haphazard, albeit fantastical look into the designers’ melding of Sicilian culture with the Far East – but what is fashion if not a form of escapism?
