Combining heritage and innovation, which are two of New Balance’s guiding principles, the MRL996 silhouette is an amalgamation of the strong beliefs the footwear brand stands for. While the original 996 is a classic and one of the most important models in the label’s archives, by injecting an innovative twist with REVlite technology as well as other engineering features, the MRL996 presents itself as an old-meets-new piece of footwear.
In this newest installment to the Taiwanese contemporary retail space INVINCIBLE and New Balance’s collaborative venture, which saw its CM1400IV in 2013, the MRL966 has been utilized to apply a sartorial aesthetic in a motif that takes inspiration from the derby racecourse. Everything about the offering exudes premium quality, with the upper sporting suede and mesh materials that also incorporate wingtip derby detailing. Aside from the extremely comfortable REVlite sole, there are a plethora of special details such as the eyelets, logos and wingtip detailing using a 3M reflective material, as well as the insole featuring a race horse print. Finally, the shoe’s tongue is constructed with caviar leather to further that luxurious feel.
The INVINCIBLE for New Balance MRL966 cohesive horse racing theme takes a nod to the event held on the first Saturday in May, where people dressed up in their most lavish garments to attend. Based on the tradition which started in 1875, men needed to attend in formal attire and women were required to wear a hat to enter the race course. Therefore, the sneakers envisages to blend seamlessly into the wardrobes of those who take an inclination to the formal, yet smart and casual aesthetic.
Enjoy the images above and keep an eye out for the sneakers to release at INVINCIBLE on May 16, while the rest of the world will see a May 23 release.
