Toronto has been the next hotbed of talent for hip-hop. Today, Jazz Cartier, a rising talent in the 6, dropped his “Marauding In Paradise” mixtape entirely produced by fellow Toronto native Lantz. However, the sound is far removed from Drake’s influence. As Cartier explained to The Fader, “Drake’s from Uptown, so that’s a totally different mindset.” The production on the tape features a spectacular variation ranging from the 808-heavy “New To Me” and “The Valley” to the musical and danceable “Rose Quartz/Like Crazy” and “Wake Me Up When It’s Over.” At 16 tracks, the project is a journey to get through. But when you emerge on the other side you’ll be more enlightened to another side of Toronto, a fan of a talented young rapper with a lot to prove.
