Mellow; soulful; refined – a few words that immediately come to mind when listening to Nosaj Thing’s new single “Cold Stares.” For the lead single off the West Coast producer/DJ’s upcoming album Faded, Nosaj has linked up once again with Chance The Rapper to create a track that lets both artists wax poetic in their own unique ways. “Cold Stares” opens with an intro which evokes sonic images of Ron Isley’s falsetto before Nosaj lays down an unflappably laid-back drumline that anchors the song. The producer’s sparse, minimal percussion style lends itself well to Chance’s smooth and introspective verse, which here sounds more akin to spoken word than hip-hop. The result is a beautifully subdued track, one that speaks in hushed tones, yet makes a resounding statement.
