For this week’s Music Essential, we are in for a big treat. Sharing with us his production gear and other basic goodies is “Brooklyn’s finest”: DJ Clark Kent, self-proclaimed “God’s Favorite DJ” and the founder of legendary DJ collective “The Supermen.” If you weren’t already aware, Kent has produced many hits during his career. After receiving mainstream recognition on his production for Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s “Player’s Anthem,” he continued his musical path by aiding the success of artists like Lil’ Kim, the Notorious B.I.G., Canibus, Estelle, 50 Cent, Slick Rick, JAY Z, Rakim, among others; perhaps his most notable track is Mariah Carey’s 2001 track “Loverboy,” which had garnered massive success and critical acclaim on a worldwide level. At a glance, you can see that Kent likes to keep things tasteful and modest, unlike many of the newer artists of today’s era. His go-to production tools of choice are the E-mu SP-1200, Technics SL-1200 MK3D, and an AKAI MPC Renaissance (which is not shown in the photo); he listens with Beats By Dre “Detox” Pro headphones. Clark Kent also enjoys photography and carries around a Sony a7 and a Leica C to snap his favorite moments. Fashion-wise, he also keeps it simple: a standard New Era fitted, a Just Don x Mitchell & Ness NY Knicks snapback, a U-Boat Flightdeck 55mm watch and a Louis Vuitton Wallet. Also, peep his customized Superman-esque insignia on the turntable and the laptop cover.
