It’s not the first time Shawn Carter has gone through this. The Daily Mail reports that JAY Z, Timbaland and Swizz Beats have all failed to credit Bruno Spoerri for sampling “On the Way” on the song “Versus.” JAY and company reportedly used Spoerri’s instrumental without permission, and Spoerri revealed that if they had just asked, it would have been okay, but since they didn’t, he now asks for 50 percent of the song’s earnings. He shares, “On the other hand I’m furious because it would have been so simple to clear the sample. All it would have needed was a call or an email to the company and I think it would have been relatively cheap.” After 18 months of legal proceedings, Jay agreed to pay Spoerri a portion of the earnings. You win some, you lose some.
