POLLS: Who Will Win the José Aldo vs. Conor McGregor Fight?

Will sheer experience be enough to overpower the Irish fighter’s in-cage intensity?

UFC 194 pits contender Conor McGregor against current champion José Aldo in the Featherweight title unification fight, held at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Regarded as some of today’s best pound-for-pound mixed martial artists, Aldo and McGregor will fight it out not only for the belt, but also for a spot alongside Ronda Rousey on the cover of EA Games’ upcoming UFC2.

Despite an injury to Aldo postponing an earlier fight in 2015, the two will return to the octagon as belt holders in a unifying title fight after McGregor defeated Chad Mendes at the UFC 189. Following this year’s Mayweather versus Pacquiao fight, the soon-to-be match is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated fights of the century.

Proving difficult to pick, both fighters have legitimate claims to the belt – will McGregor’s meteoric rise come to an abrupt standstill at the hands of José Aldo, or will there be a true change of guard this time around.

Regarded as one of the world’s finest fighters, Aldo is a more-than competent competitor standing, in the clinch or on the canvas. His cool head and immense skill have proven to be his defining qualities over the course of his career. McGregor on the other hand could be regarded as “a force of nature.” The Dublin native is perhaps as well known for his ‘trash talk’ as he is for his ability in the octagon, with lightning-fast speed and a true desire to win.

Aldo needs to keep out of close range, avoid getting stuck on the end of McGregor’s high-intensity shots and in turn dampen his momentum. Renowned for his fluid movement, Aldo is revered for almost stalking and circling his opponent until the opportune moment strikes. The Brazilian native will have to use his years of experience and varied skill set in equal measure to control McGregor’s aggressive onslaught and mitigate the effect of his straight-left and whip-like kicks.

Competing in the saturated featherweight division, McGregor’s ascension is no small feat and is not something to be overlooked. Ahead of the likes of Chad Mendes or Frankie Edgar, McGregor has finally set himself up for a shot at the title in the approach to his fight with Aldo almost three years after his UFC debut. Entering the fight with a total of 16 KOs, it’s hard to see McGregor repeating this trend with Aldo and a decision will almost certainly be reached through minor details.

Aldo’s sheer experience in regard to McGregor may just be enough to offset the Irish fighter’s fiery barrages, although based on past performances, it is safe to assume Aldo won’t leave unscathed. Provided Conor McGregor doesn’t make any erratic decisions and remains calm, this year’s UFC 194 will turn out to be a very interesting show down between two exceptional sportsman.
