Google Doodle Celebrates 101st Birthday of Inventor & Actress Hedy Lamarr
Learn about the life of the Austrian actress who invented Wi-Fi technology.
Few people in the world are deserving of the honor of a Google Doodle, but late Austrian-American film actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr can be placed squarely in this camp. Celebrating what would have been her 101st birthday today — she passed away in 2000 — the Google Doodle chronicles her life, from her successful film career in Austria and later Paris, to her dabbling in invention, which subsequently led to her inventing the frequency-hopping spectrum technology that prevented Allied submarine torpedoes from being remotely jammed by enemy forces during WWII. This provided the basis upon which GPS, Bluetooth, CDMA and portions of Wi-Fi technology were based, making it possible for you today to read this on your cellphone.
