De La Soul's Next Album Will Feature Damon Albarn, 2 Chainz, Little Dragon & David Byrne

De La Soul are turning to Kickstarter to fund their first album in over a decade. The New York legends are seeking to raise $110,000 with their Kickstarter campaign, though they’ve said in a statement that they already have “over 200 hours of tape” to work with and have been working on the LP’s music for several years. The currently-untitled record boasts features from Damon Albarn, 2 Chainz, Little Dragon and David Byrne, and recording for the album is set to start in April. Those who donate will be rewarded for their efforts as well. De La Soul’s David Jude Jolicoeur also released a statement explaining the decision to utilize Kickstarter to fund their next album, which you can read below.

There’s a real freedom in laying down tracks in the studio knowing that the fans are the ones directly supporting the record being made, not to mention there’s a motivation to really push the limits and make something great. That’s just not there when the direct support is coming from a label that’s mainly concerned with getting a product out, making as much profit as possible from it, and then moving on to the next one. That’s not to say profit doesn’t matter and all labels are bad—but just that it definitely lights a fire under the artist when your support is coming from the people who really understand your story and your direction. It’s a beautiful place to be.
