Earlier this week, various reports indicated that social media giant Twitter is reportedly looking to acquire SoundCloud. Although Bloomberg reports that talks between both companies have ended and Twitter Inc. is already in early-stage discussions to acquire or partner with (other) music-related startups, the “What if” question still remains. Such a merger would have had significant changes for the (digital) music industry. With over 250 million active users (recently valued at $800 million), SoundCloud has without a doubt become a digital force. Naturally, producers and DJs that are on SoundCloud would automatically be exposed to a much bigger and more active audience to integrate/share their music much easier and faster. SoundCloud could also benefit from Twitter’s existing relationships with licensing holders. However, the news of the now cancelled merger sparked a heated debate on whether one of Europe’s most successful startups should sell to a U.S. technology giant or keep growing organically. Albeit its cancellation, we leave it to you to discuss what could have happened with this merger. Submit your vote in the poll below and feel free to elaborate in the comments section.
