In the future, let’s hope more west coast posse cuts sound like this. For a frenzied-funk number dedicated to a particularly-delicious item on the menu at Roscoe’s Chicken and Waffles, Inglewood’s Damani Nkosi recruits California lyricists iLLcamille, Thurz, Oh No, S-Mak & Problem to indulge in some of Damani’s aural soul food. On “Scoe’s Special #9,” claps, horns, and drums collide like an old James Brown production, while each emcee tears up the track as if they were just recruited to be in the next Slaughterhouse. There’s been some mentions of waffle houses and soul food joints before in rap songs, but none of them ever sounded quite like this. Courtesy of all six artists, we now have a song that sounds and feels like how a well-made plate of Chicken and Waffles tastes. Damani’s album Thoughtful King is set for release on June 3, and you can follow him on Twitter.
