Known for her unorthodox approach in creating works of art, architect/artist Hong Yi joins us for this episode of OTHERS by HYPEBEAST. Born in Malaysia, Hong Yi (aka “Red,” she was given this name as “Hong” sounds like the word “red” in Mandarin) studied architecture in Australia before moving to Shanghai to pursue her professional career. While in Shanghai, she was captivated by the people and the city’s rich culture — residing in the city that her grandparents fled from some 40 years ago. After sharing videos of her artwork that she made to her friends back home, word quickly spread on the internet about her unique approach in using unconventional mediums to portray iconic subjects: creating a portrait of Mark Zuckerberg out of books and painting a portrait of Yao Ming using a basketball are only a few examples. Breaking the mold and following her instinct, Red is now fully committed in doing what she is passionate about and can put all doubts to rest. Watch the video above to learn of her creative journey and the parallels of being an artist-architect.
