In a radical reinterpretation of traditional calligraphy, South Africa-based artist Andrew van der Merwe has taken the classic art form from its usual medium of pen and paper to the sandy beaches of Cape Town for a new approach to writing-as-art. Unrestrained by the prototypical canvas, Cape Town’s shores allow van der Merwe to create a bevy of extremely detailed large-scale designs using little more than a metal bucket.
