In Paris, Julien David mixed clothing in a way that mirrored his own history. This time, the Tokyo-based, French-born designer looked to Jamaica for some added spice and in particular, the way early reggae artists threw together their outfits. That was his explanation for Spring/Summer 2014’s combination of streetwear, workwear and formal clothing — slouchy, elongated silhouettes spliced with tailoring, pixelated graphics and tropical prints. Of note were knee-length varsities, a waterproof stadium jacket, and jumpsuit worn with a bow tie that — while inspired by an earlier era — felt especially timely in today’s mix-and-match climate.
