As Nike has stepped into the role of sponsor with England’s national squad, we are presented with the unveiling of the team’s away kit for 2013. Returning to iconic red as a homage to England’s World Cup at Wembley in 1966, as well as giving nods to the Football Association’s 150th anniversary with a prominent three lions crest, the shirt articulates a notable heritage style via the tailored collar. The white top button contrasts from the placket and is fastened with red thread to imitate the St. George’s cross, while a single gold star above the crest celebrates England’s cup triumph in 1966. Ventilation holes under the arms and specialized T-bar supports on each shoulder add function to Nike’s efforts, aimed specifically at enhancing the performance of players. The Dri-FIT jerseys are crafted from recycled water bottles to align with Nike’s commitment to diverting bottles from landfills, as a result the total weight of the garment falls to around 150 grams – 23 percent lighter than previous Nike kits.
