Some may recall when Danny Way first introduced the Mega Ramp to the world via a certain major skateboarding video section. Some may even recall the harmonic melody in the background, with guitars triumphantly wailing in all their distorted glory as Way defied gravity and odds alike. Indeed, Metallica‘s contributions to skateboarding (and action sports as a whole) have lent the band a certain legendary status. Vans celebrates Metallica’s legacy with a signature footwear collection, continuing to build on the two parties’ creative partnership.
Band members James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo were each given their choice of any Vans shoe to customize as a reflection of their passions. As might be expected, the various members opted for predominantly black looks, lending the collection a dark and sinister mood. James Hetfield’s Sk8-Hi Decon comes in all-black with inspiration coming from his favorite black boots, Lars Ulrich’s black Era Laceless gets tonal detailing on the midsection, Kirk Hammett’s Slip-On is sleek in all-black, and Robert Trujillo’s Escuela model stands out with an embroidered blue mid-panel. To add depth the story, Vans will release a video for each model connecting the band to their favorite team riders. Look for the Metallica x Vans collaboration to hit retailers later this month.
