In 1997, VH1 introduced Behind the Music, a docu-series that turned pop star biography into telenovela. The series covered the rise and fall of an act and everything in between. TLC was one of the few acts that has been featured twice in the series — capturing their global popularity as well as dramatized tensions behind the scenes. VH1 now brings forth CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story, a somewhat historical re-enactment that celebrates the triumphs and tragedies of the trio that encompassed Tionne T-Boz Watkins, the late Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas. Besides the chart success and platinum plaques, the film delves into traumas such T-Boz’s (Drew Sidora) sickle cell anemia, Left Eye’s (Lil Mama) struggle under the weight of her father’s disapproval as well as Chilli (Keke Palmer) complicated relationship with producer Dallas Austin (Evan Ross), who helmed several of the group’s early hits. Definitely an interesting piece of work that honors the legacy of one of the ’90s most successful and memorable music bands.
