The theme of youth pervaded many of the shows in Paris, but nowhere was it more prominent than at Rei Kawakubo‘s presentation for COMME des GARÇONS Homme Plus. Mannequin wigs and Stephen Jones hats resembling Mickey Mouse and Bugs Bunny ears were a dead giveaway, setting the tone early on for what was to come. There were more of Kawakubo’s trademark slouchy silhouettes and long, layered tailoring, this time in bubblegum shades, bobbles, and odd sofa and wallpaper-like fabrics. Morning coats and bathrobes paired with oversized hoodies and shirts, meanwhile, suggested a man-child who had yet to evacuate his parents’ basement. During a season in which Rick Owens displayed youthful swagger and Raf Simons looked to cartoons for his inspiration, leave it to Kawakubo to design a collection truly fitting of her brand’s moniker.
