“Nipo-Brasileiro” is the term Phillip Lim used this season for the meeting of Japanese and Brazilian cultures found in South America’s largest nation. In particular, he was referencing the martial arts subculture that exists in a country where capoeira clashes with karate to form a unique brand of combat. Part street fighter, part neo-Baroque, 3.1 Phillip Lim‘s Spring/Summer 2013 collection featured above all, the unique twists and masterful construction that earned him the CFDA’s Swarovski Award for Menswear last year. Oversized tees and pullovers in metallic floral appliques and mirrored prints are new takes on the basics, while boxing and karate-inspired shorts and athletic jackets with detachable panels update classic silhouettes with modern details.
