The best interpretations of the familiar often come courtesy of an outsider’s perspective. The Japanese, most notably, have been creating improved yet loyal recreations of American garments for years. For Fall/Winter 2012, add a pair of young Italians to that mix. Roy Roger’s, a Campi Bisenzio-headquartered, Tuscany-based denim label has been creating American-inspired jeans and garments since 1949. Essentially Italy’s first denim brand, much of the label’s recent resurgence may be attributed to the work of Guido and Niccolo Biondi — the founder’s grandsons — who now helm the historic company. Their new “Rugged Vintage Autentico” collection for 2012 is a return to the label’s heyday — vintage pieces tastefully updated for modern times using premium materials and unique colors. Included in the collection are jeans worn and authentically distressed by workers for six months, while the rest of the offerings are an eclectic mix of denim, velvet and fustia in a spectacular chromatic range. Made from the natural pigments of fruits and spices, cholorophyll green, curry ochre and blueberry hues abound on a range of classic Western-style shirts, hardy outerwear and tailored pieces.
