Interactive postcards take a new form with the innovation of scent-capturing technology. Developed by Chinese designer Li Jinxuan, the system works by adapting smells via an ‘electronic nose’ that samples scents and uses pattern recognition to simulate aromas. It then transfers those smells through aroma-based inks and applies them to special photo-paper which become exposed when a clear film is peeled away. Whimsical in nature, the scent-capturing postcard printer was part of the 2012 Sony student design workshop, where a multitude of talented students presented their own creative and technologically innovative ideas.
