Some of the most respected names in horology are best known for their deep roots in the annuls of exploration. This is none truer than that of Rolex in 1960, whose Deep Sea Special watch accompanied a bathyscaph expedition into the Mariana Trench, nearly seven miles below the ocean’s surface. Fifty years later, an even deeper replication of that journey will be attempted, but this time with director James Cameron on board and wearing the all-new Rolex Deepsea Challenge watch. Engineering a watch rated to withstand the incredible pressures at depths up to 12,000 meters is no small feat, but one that Rolex was more than up to the challenge. Check out this video short that provides a unique insight into the impressive design and construction process that Rolex engineers were tasked with in the creation of this incredible timepiece. And after watching the video, don’t forget to read up on Cameron’s documentary project on the expedition here.
